Police Officer: Short circuit likely caused Notre Dame fire

PARIS (AP) – Paris police investigators believe that an electrical short has probably caused the fire at Notre Dame Cathedral, a police official said on Thursday as France rescued the firefighters who saved the world famous landmark for a day Paid tribute.

A Justice Department official told The Associated Press that the investigators had made an initial assessment of the cathedral on Wednesday but were unable to search Notre Dame for continued security threats.

The fragile walls of the cathedral were supported by wooden planks, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak of an ongoing investigation by name.

Investigators so far believe that the fire was accidental, and interrogate both the staff of the cathedral and workers who have done renovations. According to the prosecutors in Paris, about 40 people were interviewed by Thursday.

The police officer did not comment on a report in the Paris newspaper that said investigators are investigating whether the fire may have been linked to a computer failure or, among other things, the temporary lifts for refurbishment. The prosecution said only that "all traces must be explored".

With the cathedral closed to the public for years, the rector of the Catholic parish proposed to build a makeshift structure on the plaza, the Gothic landmark, and the town hall gave its approval on Thursday "subject to technical restrictions."

"The principal does not have a cathedral at the moment, but I will try to invent something," Bishop Patrick Chauvet said.

A crypt with remains from antiquity is located under the huge esplanade.

President Emmanuel Macron has said he plans to restore Notre Dame in five years' time, ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics taking place in Paris. Restoration specialists have questioned the ambitious time. Some say it could take three times as long to rebuild the 850-year-old architectural treasure.

On Thursday, Macron held a ceremony at the Elysee Palace to thank the hundreds of firefighters fought nine hours in Notre Dame on Monday evening against the fast-moving fire, prevented the destruction of the building and saved many of the important relics, which were in it.

"In a few moments we saw the right things in front of our eyes With responsibility, courage, solidarity and careful organization," said Macron. "The worst was avoided."

The main roof of the cathedral and the towering tower were destroyed, but Notre Dame iconic bell towers, rosette windows, organ and valuable works of art were saved.

Macron said the firefighters would receive an honor medal for their courage and dedication.

The Paris City Hall held a ceremony on Thursday afternoon in honor of the firefighters, with a Bach Violin Concerto, two giant banners from the monumental city headquarters, and readings from Victor Hugo's The Bucklige von Notre Dame.

Remarkably, no one was killed in the fire that erupted when the cathedral was in the early stages of a longer restoration.

Much of the island on the Seine, on which Notre Dame is located, was officially closed on Thursday by the police, which cites "major risks" of collapse and falling objects. The area had been unofficially closed since the fire.

Meanwhile, workers who used a crane put down some statues to weight the fragile gables or to reduce the retaining walls of the cathedral to keep them from collapsing, as they were no longer supported by the church's roof and its network of centuries-old woods that were consumed by the inferno.

They also fortified the support structure over one of the Notre Dame rosette window with wood planks.

Among the firefighters at thunder stag were honored, was the Paris firefighter chaplain Jean-Marc Fournier, who told the Paris newspaper that he could save the consecrated hosts of the cathedral. The newspaper said he had climbed altars to remove large paintings, but he was particularly proud to have "removed Jesus from the cathedral" – an indication of the Catholic faith that consecrated hosts are the body of Christ.

A previous report was credited to Fournier with helping rescue the crown of thorns, which was believed to have been worn by Jesus at the crucifixion, but Fournier told France Info Thursday that he had arrived after rescuers had already broken the protective cover of the relic had and an official who had the secret code to unlock her job. He praised the action that preserved "this extraordinary relic, this heritage of humanity".

Among others, Myriam Chudzinski was honored, one of the first firefighters who reached the roof when the fire raged. Loaded with equipment, they walked hundreds of steps up the narrow spiral staircase of the cathedral to one of the two towers.

"We knew the roof was burning, but the intensity was not really known," she told reporters. "It was from the top that you understood that it was really dramatic, it was very hot and we had to retreat, retreat, it spread quickly."

Benedicte Contamin, who had seen the damaged cathedral from a distance on Thursday, said she is sad but thankful that she is still there.

"It is an opportunity for France to reappear, to recognize a chance that connects us because we have been too divided in recent years," she said.
