NEW YORK (CBSNewYork / AP) – The agency, which operates New York's airports and many of its bridges and tunnels, proposes toll and toll hikes across a wide range of facilities, some of which may already be in place to keep pace with inflation and fund more than $ 30 billion in capital projects over the next decade.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey submitted their plans to levy bridge and tunnel charges and migratory tariffs on the PATH rail and on trains to JFK and Newark Liberty International Airports on Tuesday. It will also charge an extra $ 4 for app-based auto services and taxis to pick up at New York airports.
The plan met with outrage at Uber and Lyft. In a joint statement from the Independent Drivers Guild, companies said the impact would negatively impact drivers who have been struggling with poverty wages for years and are already heavily taxed.
The increases are needed to keep up with inflation and bring tariffs and tolls in line with other transport companies, the Port Authority said on Tuesday. For example, fares for flights to Newark and JFK airports have not risen for more than a dozen years. The tariffs for PATH trains have not risen for five years.

Already in September, a vote by the authority could take place in 2008 and again in 2011. The tolls increased between 2012 and 2015 in four stages. Due to inflation, a threshold will be reached in 2020, which requires a further increase, according to the Port Authority.
Tolls Will Rise from $ 15 to $ 15 According to the proposal outlined on Tuesday, the $ 16 and E-ZPass tariffs at the start of 2020 for both peak and idle times would increase $ 1.25 at Newark at $ 7.75 at both. Single tickets for PATH will remain at $ 2.75, but discounts for multiple tickets will be significantly reduced from November 1st.
Taxis and app-based auto services are charged at $ 4 per fare purchased. One of the airports and app-based services also charge $ 4.00 per charge. These fees are in line with the charges at Los Angeles International Airport and are comparable to the charges at San Francisco and Washington, DC airports, according to the Port Authority.
