The work of Mário Nora-led surgical team of the General Surgical Service of the Hospital Center of Entre Douro and Vouga (CHEDV) has been awarded the 3rd prize of the Banco Carregosa / Section North of the Medical Council (SRNOM) with a research paper, the possibility paradigm shift in the treatment of obese diabetics with inherent health gains.
The study conducted by the CHEDV team included the study of the antidiabetic effects of surgical technique innovative bariatric surgery.
This investigation has shown that the surgery in question modifies the anatomy of the antidiabetic hormone-producing cells in the gut, increases their release into the bloodstream and increases the likelihood of clinical remission of diabetes. 1
Type 2 diabetes is one of the biggest challenges facing public health today. In Portugal, an estimated 14% of the adult population is affected in general and 25% of those with obesity, representing more than one million patients. Disease-related expenditure represents 1% of gross domestic product (GDP) and 12% of health expenditure.
