President Donald Trump sent a deterrent tweet after the collapse of negotiations with Congress to end partial government cessation.
Originally planned to travel to his 16-day retreat at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. Trump now stays in Washington, DC. First Lady Melania Trump and son Barron had previously gone to the resort, but are now likely to return to the White House.
"President Trump will remain in Washington, DC for stoppage, and the First Lady will return from Florida. You can spend Christmas together," said Sarah Huckabee Sanders, White House Press Secretary, in a statement.
Trump said he would stay in the capital on Friday if Congress can not reach an agreement to avert a partial shutdown of the government, and it is uncertain if the negotiations will continue during the holidays: Congress will not resume until after Christmas, and there are no official Senate meetings scheduled for December 27.
The dispute with Congress is largely focused on funding the proposed Trump Border Wall, and both sides seem to have hardened their positions, some speculating that the stalemate will end in could endure a new year.
