Problems with lab equipment could have affected TB testing

RICHMOND, Virginia – Virginia officials say equipment difficulties in a state-owned laboratory may have led to false results for nearly 200 people tested for tuberculosis.

Officials said on Friday that they have informed affected healthcare providers about the problem recently identified by the Consolidated Laboratory Services Division.

Officials say that improper setting of a backup centrifuge to process samples could have resulted in a slight reduction in the ability to identify trace levels of TB bacteria.

The agency says the problem could have led to false negative results reporting for 1

77 people over a two-month period.

Civil servants have a list of patients who might be affected and recommend that they review each patient to determine if additional testing is needed
