<p> One One of the biggest drawbacks of the PlayStation 4 is the lack of backward compatibility, and this inequality became even more pronounced as the Xbox One added about half of the generation to the feature. </p>
<p> Surely Sony Interactive Entertainment will not make the same mistake with the PS5 again, right? Well, early reports and rumors suggest that this will not be the case, but right now we do not know because we hardly know anything about the PS5. </p>
<p> That is, NPD Group industry analyst Mat Piscatella reveals that he would be surprised if the PS5 were not backward compatible with the PS4's library. </p>
<p> "I would be surprised if the PS5 were not backwards compatible with PS4 content and Sony already has a streaming solution on the market with PlayS Now, "Piscatella said while speaking to GamingBolt. It does not surprise me if both PlayStation 5 and the next Xbox do this, although I'm sure they would do so in different ways with different messages. </p><div><script async src=

As mentioned above, we do not know much about the PS5. However, backward compatibility is more secure, at least if a patent recently filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment comes into question. The patent not only suggests that the PS5 is backwards compatible with the PS4, but also with the PS3, PS2 and the PS1

. While this sounds too good to be true, if you consider Microsoft's big push in this area, it would not be very surprising if Sony wanted to agree with Microsoft in this regard Next Xbox.

I personally believe that both the PS5 and the next Xbox will be backwards compatible. I am not sure how extensive and far reaching it will be, especially with the former. Microsoft has already shown an impetus to accept its legacy and unite its platforms under one roof, but Sony has not.

As always, all speculations and forecasts – including from industry analysts – should be taken with a grain of salt

And of course you're welcome to leave a comment that tells us what you think. Is the PS5 backward compatible?
