The Puerto Rican legislature is ready to initiate impeachment proceedings against embattled Governor Ricardo Rosselló.
The news came on Wednesday after three lawyers appointed by Puerto Rico's President Carlos Méndez Núñez had identified five crimes. According to Telemundo and other news agencies, this is grounds for impeachment.
Rosselló Secretary of Public Affairs Anthony Maceira made a statement in which he responded to rumors that the governor might resign.
" Rosselló has not yet resigned and is currently in Puerto Rico . "We repeat that all official communication is shared with the media."
The news follows the island's biggest protest in recent history, calling for Rosselló's fall over scandals involving leaked private chats and corruption investigations and arrests.
Rosselló would be the American community Lth's first governor who was indicted .
"We came to the conclusion that our recommendation to the relevant panel is indeed to institute a lawsuit against the government, which begins with the submission of a formal accusation document in order to continue the proceedings in the relevant chamber Puerto Rican Senate, "said Enrique Colón, one of the lawyers appointed, at a press conference The Department of Justice had issued search warrants to seize the phones of several people who had participated in the private chats.
Hundreds of thousands of Puerto Ricans protested for 12 consecutive days and demanded Rosselló's fall. The island's protests continued to grow after Rosselló announced on Sunday that he would not campaign for re-election and retire from the New Progressive Party leadership for the state. He welcomed the impeachment trial initiated last Wednesday by the Legislature.
On Monday, more than half a million people paralyzed the Greater San Juan area in protest when they marched on one of the main motorways during a "people's march". That ended late at night when police fired tear gas canisters.
For the first time mass protests erupted as 889 pages of private chats between Rosselló and some of his current and former officials and close associates had leaked out.
The chats have opened local and federal investigations, in addition to recent arrests of former government officials and contractors for alleged federal fraud. Investigators investigate possible misconduct such as corruption and conflicts of interest.
The leaked chats in the messaging app Telegram have shocked the public for their profane, misogynist and homophobic comments against officials, celebrities and ordinary islanders, as well as their cynicism. The talks also showed the government's efforts to defile and condemn political opponents fall.
