Qualcomm Launches Dedicated XR1 Chip for Augmented Virtual Reality Applications



Qualcomm has released the Snapdragon XR1 Platform and a dedicated chip for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications.

The US chip maker debuted this week during a launch event at the Augmented World Expo (AWE) in Santa Clara, California

Qualcomm Names the Platform the "World's First Dedicated Extended Reality (XR) Platform" that will bring AR and VR affordable to the mainstream. XR is the way AR, VR, AI and similar technologies are described.

The current AR and VR industries are confused with a handful of entry-level and high-end devices ̵

1; from PCs to headsets. There is no cohesion and few affordable options for the general public that are interested in these technologies are interested. However, Qualcomm hopes the XR1 will help bring the industry through a range of chips for AR, VR, and artificial intelligence (AI) applications in the mainstream.

The XR1 platform has already attracted the interest of some OEMs, including Meta, VIVE, Vuzix and Picoare, who are committed to using the system. No XR1-based devices or systems have been announced, but they are unlikely to be too long.

Lance Anderson, Vice President of Enterprise Sales, VUZIX, however, confirmed that the company is working on two devices with XR1 – a blade-based gadget and an enterprise wearable gadget.

The XR1 chip was developed for performance optimization, thermal efficiency, and enhanced interactivity – a core requirement of VR and AR applications. The XR1 platform integrates an ARM-based CPU, a vector processor, a GPU, the Snapdragon XR SDK, a machine learning technology, and an advanced XR software service layer.

Qualcomm's AI engine is also part of the platform's devices in the on-board processing of AI use cases such as pose prediction and object classification. XR1 also offers degrees of freedom of three and six degrees of freedom.

The platform also supports high resolution 4K resolution of up to 60 frames per second, and an integrated display processor can provide hardware accelerated composition, dual display support, 3D overlays and APIs such as OpenGL, OpenCL and Vulkan.

"As technology evolves and demand increases, so does the importance of XR devices for the daily lives of consumers and workers," said Alex Katouzian, Senior Vice President of Qualcomm's Mobile Business Unit. "By integrating powerful visuals, high-fidelity audio and rich interactive experiences, XR1 will help create a new era of high-end, mainstream consumer XR devices."
