ALAMEDA, California – Oakland Raiders rookie safety Johnathan Abram, the 27th overall winner in this year's draft, will undergo shoulder surgery and likely miss the rest of the season, coach Jon Gruden said Wednesday.
said Gruden Abram is sent to the injured reserve.
"A big blow for our team," Gruden said after the session. "No question, it's a big loss … we'll consider this a Redshirt year for him."
Abram is said to have sustained the injury during the first quarter of the Raiders' 24/16 victory over the Denver Broncos on Monday night. Abram, defending with five tackles and a pass in 49 of 64 defensive snaps, was also on the field for four special team snaps. He was not credited with a tackle in the first quarter.
"So he goes out there and gets hurt and keeps playing …" said quarterback Derek Carr. "He said:" Yeah, I'm just starting to hit people with my other shoulder. "And that's exactly what shows you what a man he is, he's a grown man, he's a raider and he's our raider, and I'll make sure he's still part of it, he feels part of it. "1
For the game, Abram was tagged twice, once for illegal contact and once again to lower the helmet to make contact. On the second penalty, Abram accidentally kicked his teammate Gareon Conley on the helmet spike, whereupon Conley was strapped down on a stretcher and thrown off the field.
After the game, Abram looked untouched and painless at his locker.
"That's the identity we want to bring back – fast, physically and aggressively," Abram said at the time. "You come in the middle, we'll beat you, there are some pieces we left out, I know I definitely want to go back, and I know the other guys think the same way."
Abram coming in The NFL, with the reputation of being a hard hit, went on Twitter Wednesday.
