Rashida Tlaib will wear a Palestinian robe while she is sworn into Congress

The Michigan Democrat announced on social media Friday that she intends to wear a Thobe for the ceremony.

"Sneak peek: I'll wear it when I'm sworn into the congress," she wrote on Instagram, including the hashtags #PalestinianThobe and #ForMyYama (Arabic for mother).

Palestinian women traditionally wear hand-embroidered dresses. The embroidery of each dress is unique and represents the city from which the wearer originated. For Palestinians, this is seen as a way of being proud of their heritage.

Tlaib is the daughter of Palestinian immigrants from Beit Our al-Foqa, a village in the West Bank near Ramallah.

Tlaib will occupy the seat occupied by Democratic deputy John Conyers, who has been accused of sexual misconduct last year. In the parliamentary elections after her first victory in August in the 1

3th congressional district of Michigan, she ran out without opposing candidates.

After this victory, Tlaib appeared at a celebration where she was hanged in a Palestinian flag and her mother broke out in a rage. Pitched vocal sound that many Middle Eastern women celebrate.

Tlaib, a self-proclaimed progressive, is a critic of President Donald Trump and was arrested two years ago for disrupting a Trump speech in Detroit.

It will be one The first two Muslim women to go to Congress early next year. Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, will be the first US legislator wearing a headscarf or hijab.

Only two other Muslims were elected to Congress, and both are currently in office: Democratic MP Keith Ellison of Minnesota and Democratic MP Andre Carson of Indiana. Ellison leaves Congress at the end of the month after being elected Minnesota Attorney General.
