Several studies in recent years have identified inter alia relationships between resveratrol, a grape shell phenol, and a decrease in depression. The most recent study on this work comes from the University of Buffalo, where researchers identified how resveratrol affects experiences with depression and anxiety. The key to this beneficial effect may be the blocking of an enzyme called phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4).
Resveratrol and Depression
Phosphodiesterase 4 is affected by corticosterone, a stress hormone that regulates the body's response to the various stressors of life. Someone who suffers from chronic stress may have too much of this hormone circulating in his brain. Too much stress often leads to anxiety and depression.
There are a number of antidepressants and anxiety medications that are not effective in about one-third of those affected. Much of the research has focused on uncovering the cause of these two common mental disorders, but the development of generally effective therapies with little side effects is still elusive.
The answer could be Resveratrol, the new study has found. It has been found that this compound is neuroprotective by inhibiting the expression of PDE4, which increases when too much corticosterone is present. It has been discovered that PDE4 induces anxiety and depression-like behaviors in mice that lowers cyclic adenosine monophosphate in the body and ultimately leads to physical changes in the brain.
Red wine is no answer
Resveratrol is found mainly in the skins of grapes, so the active substance in red wine is contained in relatively high quantities. The study shows that use of Resveratrol can help people suffering from chronic stress by inhibiting PDE4. Regular consumption of red wine is not a solution.
Red wine, of course, contains alcohol, and alcohol carries risks that can offset the benefits someone would derive from resveratrol. In addition to the risk of dependency, especially in the case of depressed and anxious people, who turn to the drink for the relief, the alcohol consumption is associated with various health risks.
Along with its potentially negative effects on the liver, pancreas and heart, alcohol has a profound effect on the brain and the balance of the chemicals it contains. Frequently consumed alcohol can worsen depression and anxiety in those affected. Problems that are becoming harder and harder to solve in addictions.
Instead of drinking red wine, individuals can consume Resveratrol by eating the grapes that make red wine and other foods that contain the phenol, including cranberries, cocoa, peanuts, pistachios, and dark chocolate.
Resveratrol is also sold as an isolated over-the-counter supplement, but it is unclear whether it provides the same health benefits in this way. People should consult with their doctor before consuming phenol as a nutritional supplement.
