RICHMOND – The injury error struck again.
The Washington The Redskins have lost Daron Payne in the first round for two to three weeks. The ankle injury suffered an injury after training on Friday. The 13th Draft nomination is in a boat but will be okay in the long run, Coach Jay Gruden said before training on Saturday.
Payne worked with unit number 1 during the summer sessions and the first days of the training camp. He went down during a team training session and was watched by coaches on the field. Payne never went into the training tent or inside, but stayed on the sideline. Gruden said the injury is not a big setback.
"He's in good shape," Gruden said. "He's big, strong, physical, he's probably going to train harder in his two weeks, he's in good shape, so it's no big deal, he's very smart, he knows the defense, so he's in good form.
Payne was brought into the team as a top-run scorer in the draft from Alabama and matched Jonathan Allen's 17th place in the hopes of improving the league's worst run defense. He made an immediate impression as a powerful force in the middle of the line of defense, pushing back the offensive linemen and breaking the bag.
The news may shock Redskins fans following Allen, also an Alabama product, with a Lisfranc foot injury and playing only five games as a rookie. Elsewhere on the injury front, linebacker Ryan Anderson will be kept exposed even after his back cramps Friday. Gruden hopes that Anderson will only have one day and that the runner-up will be back on Sunday. And linebacker Zach Brown will be on a quad daily basis on the first day of camp Thursday.
"It's nothing serious, just how much he wants to enforce it," Gruden said, "how much he can push it through without repeating it."
The Redskins will be their first day in the pads on Saturday spend a few live shots. Gruden said he would curb some reboots because he does not have multiple defensive linemen and linebackers. We have some corpses, "Gruden said," but we'll get as many reps as we can without putting too many in the IV tank. "
The coaching staff has slowly increased the workload of players with previous injuries Gruden said that against Morgan Moses on Saturday" one or two replays "should be pending.Tackle Trent Williams will remain in individual drills and tight end Jordan Reed is expected be included on Saturday 1 to 1 reps and possibly 7 in 7 work on Sunday.
