Bringing together some of the largest American companies to drive the renewable energy market. Known as the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance, the group includes Apple, Alphabet, General Motors, Walmart, Johnson & Johnson, Facebook and Disney, as well as numerous other companies and nonprofit organizations.
The declared target of the group is CNBC To help companies to use new ways of clean shopping energy. "It's really about bringing as many players to the market as possible and giving everyone access to clean energy," says Michael Terrell, head of Google's energy market strategy.
Fighting existing regulations
Over the last 6 years Most of these companies have been looking for new ways to meet their renewable energy needs. For example, Google wanted to operate its data center in Douglas County, Georgia with low-cost solar energy, but regional markets did not allow companies to source renewable energy directly from utilities. Together with partners Walmart, Target and Johnson & Johnson, Google worked with state officials to develop a new program that companies can do just that.
Leveraging the lessons learned from these early adopters, REBA aims to eliminate the barriers to entry "clean energy" by fine-tuning contracts, addressing regulatory and policy hurdles, testing new green technology programs, and helping companies build internal systems, that facilitate the path to purchasing clean energy.
Few companies have developed the know-how to enter into corporate renewables deals. "Most of these big buyers have never really done anything other than what you or I do, what an energy bill pays," she says. Michael Terrell says that for a company participating in a renewable energy deal, it should be as easy as clicking a button.
The REBA intends to empower tens of thousands of companies to purchase renewable energy in the coming years. To date, there are about 5,000 companies in the US doing this. Last year, companies committed to around 16 gigawatts of renewable energy. REBA wants to expand the market to 60 gigawatts by 2025. This roughly corresponds to the total solar capacity installed in America today.
With more companies embarking on the renewable energy revolution, it is essential to reduce carbon emissions in the US, as companies are responsible for most of the energy used in power generation in the technology and industrial sectors ,
The REBA is launched with around 200 corporate buyers and 125 renewable energy developers and service providers. Much of the foundation for the group came from charitable organizations such as the Rocky Mountain Institute, the World Wildlife Fund, the World Resources Institute, and the Business for Social Responsibility. Well, if only someone could do the same for private customers.
