DETROIT (AP) Nicholas Castellanos slipped over the home side, Pittsburgh catcher Francisco Cervelli lunging for him – and for a few fleeting moments, the Detroit Tigers rushed onto the field to celebrate victory on opening day.
The pirates were waiting for a possible pardon.
"We thought we had a shot, a legitimate shot to get the game in our way, the piece went our way because we made a good throw and well enough day to get it before he did touched the plate, "said Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle. "At the end of the day, just wait to see what they say in New York."
Sure enough, the call was overturned and Castellanos was expelled ̵
Castellanos was initially credited with the victory run in the lowest position of the 10th, but as the review dragged on, the cheer went back somewhat, and the Detroit players patiently waited outside their dugout to know about the umpires ,
Tiger Manager Ron Gardenhire was not so calm as soon as it came. In his first game since 2014, he was ejected after the call was reversed.
Then the teams continued to play.
"We had a lot of games that needed definite and conclusive evidence to flip, and there was an angle that looked like it could have caught my arm and we were supposed to turn the game around and the tigers not win, "Castellanos said more than a little sarcasm. "It does not seem to be really consistent how the process went in the past."
Polancos Drang's 3-0 first-leg win from Alex Wilson (1-0) gave the Pirates a comfortable lead – or as comfortable as it could be on a crazy day when both teams scored four runs in the ninth round.

"I saw some people who went to the top of the ninth," said Tigers bank manager Steve Liddle, who then spoke with reporters at Gardenhire. "I think you should stick with this team."
JaCoby Jones hit the single that initially seemed to hit Castellanos, but after a throw of left field player Corey Dickerson, the game was in short supply. "I did not feel any label, and Cervelli says, 'I can not believe they knocked it over,' said Castellanos. "So two people involved in the play were shocked."
Cervelli said he had tagged Castellanos, and his surprise at the reversal was more because of the situation.
"I could not believe it because of the extra innings, but he was outside," Cervelli said. "I thought they would leave it like that."
