Researchers come ingeniously to move heavy stones

When it comes to moving 25 tons of stone, heavy machinery is probably the first option that comes to my mind. Considering massive monuments like the Moai on Easter Island, there must be a way that the ancient peoples could transport this heavy material without the introduction of machinery. Cambridge-based Matter Design has come closer to this engineering feat by exploring "weightless" concrete shapes. They worked on research and development at CEMEX, a building materials company, and created a method of moving rocks that normally require cranes or other equipment to lift.

The project Walking Assembly was documented in a fascinating video. Here, on average, large people move the large concrete forms from individual parts into a single group. The stones have rounded edges that allow them to swing and tilt forward and backward, as well as angular elements through which the pieces fit together like puzzles. In addition, huge pins are inserted into sections of the stones that provide more motion control. When they are all together, the parts become whole platforms, walls and stairs.

So how is it possible to move those huge pieces? The team focused on density to make the task feasible. "By using variable-density concrete," explains Matter Design, "the center of mass of the object is precisely calibrated to control the stable but light motion of the elements."

Research has great application potential in the outside world ̵

1; especially in areas that are difficult to achieve with machines. It can be easier to put together designs without the use of heavy machines and to build them modularly. So if something had to be repaired, the whole thing would not have to be demolished, but redesigned.

Matter Design and CEMEX collaborated on Walking Assembly a research project that allowed this to be done by people trying to move heavy stones.

The use of variable-density concrete allowed the massive molds – a total of 25 tons – to be easily shaken and rolled into a single unit.
