Ricky Martin was one of many demonstrators calling for Puerto Rican Governor Ricardo Rosselló to resign after it became known that the politician and his aides sent homophobic, misogynist and sexist messages in a group chat room. When Rosselló announced his retirement, Martin celebrated the news.

He urged Puerto Rico to make progress together, saying that the protests only worked because they were "united" in the cause. He urged his fellow citizens to "keep their eyes open".
"I feel very calm now while I celebrate," Martin wrote. "It was a roller coaster ride of emotions From anger to joy (I cried like crazy) This was a birth.
We can now achieve anything we want, we are an example, no more corruption, no more trash. WE SAVED OUR ISLAND. "
