Rob Hiaasen, a newspaper hunter, began his career in Tampa Bay

SARASOTA, Fla. – The brother of the author Carl Hiaasen, Rob, is one of the victims of the shooting of Annapolis, Maryland, and shot at the newspaper Capital Gazette

Rob Hiaasen launched in Sarasota and was working for the AM news radio station WQSA

Ralph Janotti the news director at WQSA. He helped to engage Hiaasen immediately after graduating from the University of Florida.

"I knew he would go places," said Janotti. "I had always hoped it was radio, but obviously he did well in the paper."

Janotti had not seen Hiaasen since the beginning of his career, but the couple stayed on Facebook and chatted last week. In this conversation Hiaasen admitted that he felt a little out of place on the radio.

"I've always been a nervous wreck in the air," Janotti said, reading Hiaasen's comment. "I really just wanted to write."

Then the shooting happened. Janotti saw in the news that Hiaasen was killed.

"I can not explain to you the depth of the emotions, the rollercoaster I was with, because you have the nostalgia, the memories that are all very pleasant," said Janotti. "And then you have the realization that they stop. "

He says that Hiaasen's legacy will continue to live on in his family and emerging journalists.

" He cared for the people, "Janotti explained," helping children become good journalists he was someone who, if you knew him, you were proud to know him. "

Janotti said that Hiaasen only worked for WQSA for a few years, his brother Carl is a longtime Miami Herald columnist and a famous Novelist, and his family still lives in South Florida.
