The Carolina Panthers could be without an extra offseason defense for a while.
Cornerback Ross Cockrell who joined the Panthers after a two-year contract with a freelance agency, was dragged out of the field on Monday with a broken leg from NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.
The injury occurred after Cockrell collided in the end zone with broad receiver Torrey Smith and Cockrell shouted: " My leg is broke ."
Panthers coach Ron Rivera finished training after injury, the person reported.
With Daryl Worley now with the Oakland Raiders, Cockrell was expected to compete for a startup work against James Bradberry.
While the Panthers have Bradberry, rookie Donte Jackson, Corn Elder and Lorenzo Doss on the list, the depth of the team at cornerback is tested when Cockrell misses out on significant time. Cockrell has started 32 games in his four-year career.
