  Rotary honors World Polio Day

The Newnan Times-Herald

If you see the Rotary Club logo on the courthouse tonight, you might wonder why.

Rotarian members in Newnan are among the millions participating in the World Polio Day to mobilize attention, resources and support to stop polio – a vaccine-preventable disease that still threatens children in parts of the world ,

World Polio Day celebrations are streamed live from Philadelphia. The program will highlight the progress made in the eradication program and the work that still needs to be done.

Since Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication initiative 30 years ago, the incidence of polio has fallen by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases per year to just 22 cases in 201

7.

Global efforts have reduced the number of reported cases of Polo by 99.9 percent, according to Rotary International. So far, only 20 new cases have been reported this year: 15 in Afghanistan and five in Pakistan.

To support this progress and protect all children from polio, Rotary has committed $ 50 million annually to support global polio eradication efforts. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will meet Rotary's commitment 2: 1.

Rotary Club Newnan has raised $ 9,876.98 and with the Gates Foundation Match, Rotary Club Newnan has raised $ 18,458.98, meaning that the club has vaccinated nearly 18,500 children.

"Rotary Club Newnan is committed to eradicating polio," said Newnan club president Cathy Wright. "Having members and their family members affected by this disease makes it easy to want future generations to never experience what they've done."

The club plans to raise $ 1,000 by June next year to vaccinate 3,000 children with the Gates Foundation Match.

Rotary International has contributed more than $ 1.8 billion since 1985 to stopping polio.

Without full financial support and political commitment, members say that the debilitating disease could return to previously polio-free countries and endanger children everywhere.

Rotary Club Newnan is a nonprofit organization focused on "service to itself". The club meets weekly at 12 noon on Friday at Newnan Country Club at 1356 US-29. Guests are always welcome.
