RTX off? Watch this stunning Ray Tracing demo on Radeon Vega

It would be an understatement to say that Nvidia has done real-time ray-tracing. The Green Team has invested a lot of money and resources in its development and flagship projects. ] A Brief Review of RTX and Raytracing

Raytracing is not yet a household name, but it's a big deal. The technology essentially simulates the behavior of light in real life and realistically reproduce millions of light sources as they move across objects and within a scene is subtle in itself, often subtly combined with other rendering techniques to create a very immersive experience.

Nvidia's new RTX graphics cards are designed to handle the extreme processing power required for real-time ray tracing, and the accompanying price tag is not easy to swallow. Nvidia's underlying marketing message was, "You want this eye candy, you need RTX."

Crytek just entered and said, "Well, not quite."

Crytek's experimental (this is is still under development) real-time raytracing demo (see below) was created with a new version of CryEngine's Total Illumination This feature will integrated into the game engine of the company later this year. But here's the interesting part: Crytek says his raytracing spell is API Hardware Agnostic and which can run on all modern graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD.

To bring the point home, the "Neon" The following "Noir" demo scenes are real-time renderings on AMD's Radeon 56 GPU.

In the above video demonstration, pay particular attention to the reflection of the drone in windows, the way in which the red and blue light are reflected by broken glass, especially on wet surfaces. Do you see these neon lights realistically in the puddles on the street? The reflection of light on the shiny chrome of the drone? Absolutely stunning.

Crytek also says its upcoming technology will be optimized to take advantage of performance enhancements provided by graphics cards such as the RTX 2080 Ti and Radeon VII are supported by graphic APIs like Vulkan and DX12.

Before we all get upset, we should remember that this is more than just goodwill towards gamers. Crytek wants game developers to use CryEngine (which is certainly a compelling argument) and took this opportunity to remind the said developers that CryEngine offers 5% royalty, no royalties and full source code availability.

Hopefully, if Ray Tracing has become a household name, entry costs are low and the number of games it contains is very high.
