A 6-year-old Russian girl born without lips or chin can smile now, according to a report from a life-changing operation.
Darina Shpengler was operated on at the Great Ormond Street Hospital 11 hours in London last week, where doctors were building a jaw for her, the sun reported.
Doctors failed to diagnose the young girl, but believe she suffers from a condition caused by "spontaneous mutations." Her disorder has impaired her ability to eat and talk as well as laugh and smile, the sun reported.
However, the recent surgery is the first in a series of procedures that doctors say will give her a complete face.
"We made Darina a nice little jaw, it's in a good position, and we put more skin on her neck," Dr. David Dunaway in a YouTube video after the operation.
Her mother Elena Shpengler said the recent procedure has allowed her daughter to grin widely for the first time.
"This had completely changed our daughter and she learned to laugh," said the mother.
