The chip was built using Samsung's second 10-nanometer process and appears to be the chip of the latest Galaxy S10 + ceramic edition. This device has 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM, and Samsung only makes three LPDDR4X chips: two 8GB chips and the new 12GB chassis. It is also expected to be released in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S1
As the new RAM requires very little storage space, it will help device manufacturers to create more space for larger batteries, 5G chips, AI cameras and more cameras. It runs at the same speed as the LPDDR4 RAM (4,266 MB / s), but consumes up to 10 percent less power. It's probably not cheap, so you'll only see the chips in the most expensive versions of premium smartphones.
The additional memory makes phones faster and, above all, multitasking smoother. We've tested the 12GB Galaxy S10 + and can confirm that the extra memory games like PUBG helps along with browsing, using Instagram and other tasks. However, especially demanding tasks, such as recording stabilized 4K HDR video data, even require 12 GB of RAM.
Samsung said it would boost production of existing 8-GB chips and the new 12-GB 10-nanometer chips expected to meet demand. "With the LPDDR4X, we are strengthening our position as a premium mobile memory manufacturer, well positioned to meet the rapidly growing demand from global smartphone manufacturers," said Samsung Vice President Sewon Chun.
