I've written about the science of coffee over the last few years. For centuries, people thought coffee was a health risk in the sense of the widespread, if misguided, logic that anything that makes you feel so good must be bad for you.
In short, coffee is a superfood. However, we really did not know how great it was until University of Nottingham researchers conducted a series of tests this week to find out how coffee reacts and affects body fat.
Fast background. Your body has two types of fat: 1) white adipose tissue (WAT) and 2) brown adipose tissue (BAT).
WAT stores energy so you can survive a famine. Your body can store large amounts of WAT, which makes people (in the truest sense of the word) look fat.
BAT softens your body chemistry to keep you healthy. It improves your body's ability to deal with blood sugar, increases bone health and density, helps build muscle mass, increases longevity, and helps burn WAT more efficiently.
The problems with BAT are 1
Following groundbreaking research at the University of Nottingham, drinking coffee (but not water) stimulates BAT. To cite the study:
Caffeine intake was associated with weight loss and increased energy expenditure. Drinking coffee (but not water) stimulated the temperature of the supraclavicular region located in the main region of BAT in adult humans and is indicative of thermogenesis. These results show that caffeine promotes BAT function in thermoneutral behavior and may potentially be used therapeutically in adult humans.
In other words, coffee warms your BAT, making your body convert WAT into energy more efficiently. Or, more simply, coffee burns fat in the truest sense of the word.
It is hard to say that you have to drink coffee without sugar, milk, syrup and flavors to improve your health, supposedly "bitter" coffee taste. Some Starbucks preparations contain as much fat and sugar as a bacon and cheese burger.
So I'll tell you a health secret: When properly prepared (freshly roasted, freshly ground, dripped in Pyrex) coffee is slightly sweet and not bitter at all. In addition, if you do not ruin your coffee by adding foreign waste, you can taste all the overtones that subtly change each type of coffee.
Even if I write this, I drink coffee, which I prepared properly. I guarantee you, it's pretty smooth and not at all bitter. This special variety (from Sumatra) has a touch of chocolate flavor.
