Score Cardinals Vs. Nationals: Anibal Sanchez flirts with No-Hitter as Washington wins the NLCS Game 1

The Washington Nationals defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 in Friday's National League Championship Series 1 game to take the lead in the Best of Seven series. The winner of the series will claim the NL pennant and advance to the World Series, where he will face either the Houston Astros or the New York Yankees.

Here is a brief summary of what happened in Game 1.

Why the Nationals Won

Anibal Sanchez brought a no-hitter into the late stages of the game and did not give up his first basic stroke until there were two outs in the eighth inning. Sanchez fell in one fell swoop and hit two before that point, but he confused the Cardinals with good position and clever pitching. The Nationals also received more clutch hits from Howie Kendrick ̵

1; he scored the first run after he had led the second inning with a double, and later overtook Adam Eaton in the seventh with a single.

Why the Cardinals Lose

It's hard to win a game if you can not hit or get on a base. Cardinals were excluded from the escape and hit list for most of the game, wasting nearly all the production they received from Miles Mikolas and their pitching staff. (Mikolas, by the way, made a quality start before handing it over to a bullpen who usually held up against a good national team.)

Turning Point

When Sanchez conquered the hill? We suspect you could refer to Kendrick's double in the second or maybe his single in the seventh round. Alternatively, you could say Jose Martinez's single to break the no-no in the eighth. But the answer is that Sanchez suppressed the Cardinals' offense in a way that meant it was, in a sense, a "turning point" when he was on the hill excreting Tommy Edman for the first Out in the Bottom of the Eight and to temporarily maintain the no-no. Take a look:

This is certainly the "highlight" criteria that most (if not all) need no-hitter. Unfortunately it should not be – not this evening.

What's next?

The Nationals and Cardinals will play again on Saturday afternoon. Game 2 starts shortly after 16:00. ET. Max Scherzer will conquer the hill for the Nationals, while Adam Wainwright conquers the ball for the Cardinals, hoping to draw the Red Birds in the series as well.
