As part of a new video series, retired NASA astronaut Scott Kelly has been properly briefed on life in space, "Star Trek" and a spooky urine ball.
Kelly was released today (July 18) in the first video of a digital series developed by Biography at A + E Networks and Reddit. The series aims to bring Reddit AMAs to life with intimate interviews and captivating footage. The video begins with a question to Kelly, who historically has shared science fiction fans: "Star Wars" or "Star Trek." "Kelly said while liking" the idea of Star Trek, where you get this Places visit, do not bother with what's going on, "there's something about the lightsaber that I really want to like one of them." In true AMA style, Kelly answered a variety of questions. When asked to name the scariest thing he encountered while working on the space station, he replied, "One gallon of urine ball mixed with acid," which he had to tidy up. "Essentially," Kelly added, "it's sulfuric acid mixed with urine – which basically keeps the toilet from clogging up."
Kelly also went a little deeper and talked about how space has changed him. He described his space experiences beginning with his first start and thought, "Wow, I'm just ready to do the coolest thing I've ever done, and by the way, I could get killed." The astronaut also discussed how his experiences in space gave him a new perspective, or "a sense of empathy with the environment and the human condition."
