Uasin Gishu County will soon have a 1 billion cancer center built by the Mediheal Group of Hospitals.

Construction has already begun, and according to Joe Kirwa, general manager of business development at Mediheal, the plant will be completed in 18 months.
During a free medical camp, Mr. Kirwa said yesterday in Kakamega that the center will provide comprehensive management of various cancers under one roof.

Travel Abroad

"Kenyans will no longer travel to the UK or India for a special cancer treatment. We will treat her here in Kenya, "Kirwa said.
He announced that Mediheal has partnered with Varian Medical Systems, a US-based hospital that develops medical devices to support local cancer treatment.
Kirwa also said that national and regional governments have offered to help the hospital be completed on time.
He decided that Mediheal is currently undergoing liver transplants, making it the second hospital in the country to do the operation after Kenyatta National Hospital.
According to Kirwa, a liver transplant is an operation in which a diseased or damaged liver is replaced by a healthy one by a donor.
Currently, patients spend at least 9 million Sh in order to undergo liver transplantation abroad.
"We have done 52 liver transplants since April of this year, and all patients are in stable condition," said Kirwa.
"One person can donate a liver to two patients who need a transplant. If you donate a liver, it will return to normal after two years, which is called regeneration, "said Kirwa.
In Africa, only Egypt and South Africa can perform liver transplants.

Pneumonia

Lorna Kimetto, a medical doctor at the facility, who worked as a team leader during the medical camp, said that among the four medical camps she had carried out in the western region, pneumonia was one of the most common infections.
Ms Kimetto said the disease is particularly prevalent among young children.
Arthritis, infertility, asthma and breast complications have also been identified as other leading medical problems.
"We urge county governments from the western region to invest heavily in curbing these diseases. They kill many people. These are manageable conditions that can be treated and many lives saved, "said Kimetto.
