Shocking Work Related Injuries Statistics

Work-related injuries are common, in some instances, injuries can be severe enough that they can result in permanent disability or even death. However, what remains unknown to many people are the shocking statistics for work-related injuries that are published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the US.

However, the injuries were nonfatal and represent an incidence rate of about 2.4 cases per every 100 full-time workers. These figures only represent the state of North Carolina, and the rate of workplace injuries is even higher at the national level.

The occurrence of Workplace Related Injuries

The other shocking statistics, according to the National Safety Council, is that at least one worker is injured every seven seconds. This translates to about 510 injuries per hour and about 12,600 per day. Thus, about 4.6 million cases are recorded each year, which also translates into millions of lost workdays.

Workplace injuries are prevalent in the private sector, service industry as well as in the state and local government. The statistics of recorded cases of workplace injuries show that accidents occur in different sectors, including some seemingly surprising. For example, in North Carolina, the construction sector and the financial service sector recorded an increase in injuries at work. 

The fire department and police force top the list in terms of workplace accidents, followed by transportation, the manufacturing, the installation as well as the construction sectors. The list goes on to include every industry, but injuries are more prevalent in the industries where the employees frequently come into contact with different objects and machines.  

In 2018 alone, of the 70,600, 96.2 percent of the total injuries were recorded in the private industry with 2,800 recordable cases for workplace illnesses. Out of these illness cases, categories such as hearing loss, respiratory illnesses, and skin disorders accounted for about 36 percent of workplace illnesses in North Carolina. Overall, the percentage of work-related injuries remains high with varying statistics for the different causes, some of which can be preventable while others are not.

The Major Causes of Workplace Injuries

Overexertion is the major cause of workplace injury which includes repetitive motions such as lifting and lowering objects. It constitutes about 33.54 percent of the total injuries. Other injuries result from contact with objects and equipment in the workplace. This constitutes about 26 percent of the total injuries recorded in different workplaces. 

Slips, trips, and falls constitute about 25.8 percent of the total workplace injuries. One thing that is common between these major causes of workplace injuries is that they can be prevented. 

Impacts of Workplace Injuries

When injuries occur in the workplace, the affected people would spend several days away from work, and this has an impact on productivity. Some cases can lead to the transfer of the employees, which can affect the viability of the company if the victims were skilled workers.

More than 104,000,000 production days are lost annually due to the impacts of injuries at work. This figure is even more shocking when it translates into the billions of lost revenue; due to the reduced production as a result of the injuries. Some employees may be forced to take many days off, and this means that the company will be forced to operate without the workers, but also unable to hire new employees over such a short period. 

The other issue is that companies do not only experience loss of production, but are also compelled to pay workers’ compensation benefits to the employees injured in the line of duty. Companies that fail to pay those benefits face the risk of dealing with several lawsuits, which can end up affecting their viability and reputation. 

While workplace injuries are common, there are shocking statistics that may be unknown to some people. Injuries in the workplace are not good for the organization since they lead to financial loss and potential loss of credibility. Production would be slowed down as the works take days off to recuperate at home. At the same time, the company would also be forced to pay workers’ compensation benefits.
