TRENTON, Fla. – Someone shot through the window of a North Florida restaurant Thursday afternoon and killed two MPs who were given food, officials said. Gilchrist County Sheriff Bobby Schultz identifies the slain MPs during a press conference as Sgt. Noel Ramirez, 30, and Deputy Taylor Lindsey, 25.
MEPs were given food at Ace China Restaurant in Trenton when the shooter walked to the building and through Window shot at her, Schultz said. Colleagues who responded to the scene found the shooter dead outside the shop.
Schultz would not say how the suspect died, adding that the state law enforcement agencies were investigating. There is no recognizable motive for shooting.
"I have no answers to why that happened," Schultz said, noting that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating. Schultz said that 29-year-old Ramirez was a 7-year-old veteran married to children. Lindsay was 25 years old. A statement released Thursday night said the men simply sat down to eat and that there was no crime and no disruption, reports CBS Gainesville affiliate WGFL.
Schultz said he rushed to the scene as soon as he heard of the filming. He said it was important to remember that attacks like Thursday can take place anywhere, even in small towns like Trenton.
"After 26 years of doing that, there's nothing that could prepare you for meaningless deaths," Schultz said.
Schultz said he spoke to both families.
"As you expect, you can never be prepared for such a thing, but do not be fooled, I'm proud of their families," Schultz said. "They understood when their loved ones nailed the badge, and they lashed the gun that was a possibility."
Ramirez, he said, had a contagious smile. He said both were excited about participating in the First Responder Olympics. "Sgt. Ramirez and Deputy Lindsey were the best of the best, they were men of integrity, they were loyal men, they are God-fearing, and they love what they did."
The name of the shooter was not published immediately.
Trenton is located in northern Florida, about 56 kilometers west of Gainesville.
