Shooting near Highway 215 in Riverside: Gunman killed; 3 CHP officers injured

A California Highway Patrol official was killed and two other officers were wounded on Monday night in a wild shootout at Riverside Highway 215.

The conditions of the two other officials were unknown, according to the Riverside Police Department. The suspect was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to first reports from the law enforcement agencies at the scene, a CHP motorcycle officer stopped a driver for a crime.

The suspect allegedly opened fire on the officer after first grabbing his truck and pulling a gun after his truck was confiscated.

The officer returned the fire, and the two other CHP officers soon arrived and involved the suspect in a shootout. Law enforcement officials from local authorities also came to help.

According to law enforcement, dozens of rounds were fired at the scene.

It is not known by what shots the suspect was killed to the officials.

Several sources said the suspect was still shooting when sheriff's deputies and a policeman arrived at the riverbank.

"We do not know why," Riverside police spokesman Ryan Railsback said about the gunman's motive. "It will all be part of this lengthy investigation."

Jennifer Moctezuma, 31

, from the Moreno Valley, drove home with her six-year-old twins when a bullet flew through her windshield.

Retired Marine Charles Childress, 56, also from Moreno Valley, was sitting in the car behind them when he heard shots and saw the bullets shooting through Moctezuma's windshield.

Then he heard the kids screaming and knew he had to get the family out of the car in front of him. [19659002] "I was 21 years in the Marine Corps and my education has just started," said Childress.

Childress cited Moctezuma and her two children, who were all unharmed as they crawled to the bottom of the bridge away from the shots.

"He's my hero," Moctezuma said. "He is my hero."

A California Highway Patrol dispatcher said the department responded to reports of gunfire but could not provide details. A dispatcher from the Riverside County Fire Department said the agency was asked to respond to Box Springs Boulevard and Eastridge Avenue.

On the 215 Freeway in Box Springs were CHP cruisers, fire engines and ambulances.

The freeway was closed and Caltrans asked people to avoid the area. According to Metrolink, the tracks near the incident were shut down and the trains diverted.
