RNA is the working copy of a gene, which is hugely important.
While DNA reveals what G enes a creature had, and the RNA could tell which particular genes were working – and which were not active.
But in a rare feat, researchers were able to analyze RNA from the liver, cartilage and muscle tissue of the long-dead pooch.
"Ancient DNA researchers have previously been relied upon to test RNA as an RNA because it is generally more stable than DNA, and more prone to enzymatic degradation," said Dr Oliver Smith, of the University of Copenhagen, who published the study in PLOS Biology.
"However, in the sequencing of ancient RNA from plant material, we speculated that a well-preserved animal specimen was frozen in the permafrost
"To our delight, we did not find RNA from various tissues, but in some cases the signal was so strong that we could distinguish between tissues in a way that makes biological sense."
What is RNA? A simple explanation
It's different from DNA, in which it contains one single strand – rather than two intercoiled strands
It's also made
DNA is the core information that makes up a cell
But RNA is the active ingredient that does the work inside cells
All of the DNA has been found to be isolated on Earth
