Sinclair buys SportsTime Ohio, Fox Sports Ohio

BALTIMORE – The channels on which most of the Indian and Cavalier games are broadcast are now officially new.

Following a lengthy trial, the US Department of Justice approved Friday the sale of 21 Fox Sports regional networks to Sinclair Broadcast Group for $ 10.6 billion. The networks that hold broadcasting rights for 42 combined teams in Major League Baseball; the National Basketball Association; and the National Hockey League include SportsTime Ohio (home of the tribe) and Fox Sports Ohio (Cavs).

Sinclair President and CEO Chris Ripley made the following statement:

"We are very pleased and excited about the transformational aspects RSN's acquisition for Sinclair will bring striving to bring these opportunities to life before us lies an exciting future. "

The RSNs were technically owned by Disney after the company bought 21

st Century Fox from Fox Corporation last year would have. However, the DOJ instructed Disney (owner of the ESPN network family) to sell the sports channels or conduct cartel disputes.

Sinclair is the largest television station in the US and owns 193 channels in 100 different markets. The organization has come under fire in recent years because of a conservative bias, particularly because of "must-run" political commentary segments, which often contain biased and even false statements. Local Sinclair news channels were also ordered to read commercials last year complaining of the "disturbing trend of irresponsible, one-way news that plague our country."] RELATED: Tribune Announces Sinclair Buy-Out of $ 3.9bn USD to

However, Sinclair also owns the fast-growing tennis channel and the recent internet network Stadium, both of which have turned away from politics. The company also says that the RSNs and Fox College Sports (also acquired under the deal) are operated by an indirect subsidiary called Diamond Sports Group LLC. Byron Allen, owner of Entertainment Studios and The Weather Channel, will be partnering with the company.

As the Fox Sports branding will certainly fall by the wayside, the new names for the RSNs or if such a renaming will take place are not yet known at this time. Many say it may be called "Diamond", although next year Sinclair also establishes a regional network for all Chicago Cubs called Marquee Sports Network.

SportsTime Ohio was originally created and owned by the Dolan family before it was sold. Besides the Indians, the Cleveland Monsters hockey is also at home here. Fox Sports Ohio – which started out as SportsChannel Ohio in 1989 – features the Cavs as well as Columbus Blue Jackets and Columbus Crew SC games, and is home to the Cincinnati Reds for viewers in South Ohio.
