The Singapore-made smart T-shirt allows runners to track the ECG

SINGAPORE: This is a test that is more commonly done by doctors.

You can now track your electrocardiography (ECG), which detects heart abnormalities, from your mobile phone using a T-shirt that connects to an app

This is from the local start-up KaHa and Smart Shirt, which has been developed by textile company Tex Line with the help of the Science, Technology and Research Agency (A * STAR), can also track and record fitness data such as heart rate, calories burned and levels.

The developers want to launch the product in the middle of next year, with prices expected to be 20 to 30 percent more expensive than sportswear.

An Advanced Prototype The Smart Wearable was tested for the first time during the annual One-North Run on Sunday (December 2). About 1

00 of the 2,500 runners who attended the event took part.

Most runners Channel NewsAsia spoke with said that the smart features were useful, but some said that the design of the outfit could be improved.

The accuracy of the ECG is pretty good, they actually capture heart rate deviation, "said 43-year-old runner Adrian Mok, who frequently uses heart rate monitors for his runs. "I think the comfort is okay, and the product has a lot of potential."

Mr. Alvin Tan, a 39-year-old banker, said, "This app is very useful because it helps me to track my heartbeat situation every minute before my run and while I'm running. It tells me if I have it take it easy or if I have too much pressure. "

The clothing manufacturer Jeremy Tan, 23, said the outfit could be made more comfortable.

"There is room for improvement, but I think the product as a whole is good, one step for Singapore to go into this entire wearables market," he said, syncing with a mobile app to the T-Shirt To determine vital signs of a person. (Photo: Ahmad Khan)

The smart t-shirt developers left it to Channel NewsAsia a few days before the race to try it for a run.

The smart T-shirt consists of two layers: the outer layer is made of the typical sportswear material, while the inner layer has carbon electrodes, the key sensors used

The electrodes are manufactured by A * STAR at SIMTech and the material The patent pending product also allows for sustainable washing.

"We have found that the current material on the market is unsustainable in high-wash environments, so we have a unique formulation that allows more than 100 wash cycles," said Lok Boon Keng, Program Manager in the emerging application department of A * STAR.

The smart-T-shirt's carbon electrodes loaned to Channel NewsAsia eased off after just one wash, suggesting that further improvements might be needed in this area.

Dressing the smart T-shirt for the first time can be quite complicated with the two layers.

The inner layer felt a little tight and took some getting used to. However, it was relatively pleasant during the run. The outer layer of the outfit is cut loose.

"We know that most of the designs on the market are very tight in the market, but not everyone has the solid ABS or V-shaped bodies for the general public," said Tan Soon Kiat, product manager at Tex Line.

"We have developed a two-layered design to monitor health and performance for the sport, while at the same time we still feel comfortable wearing T-shirts in our everyday lives," he added.

With the Smart T-Shirt I was able to monitor real-time physical data such as ECG, heart rate and calories during my run.

The app can also serve as a personal coach.

Wearable Tech developers say it can be used for purposes other than training.

"This application can be used not only in homes but also in hospitals to monitor patients," said Ms. Sim Seo Lay, business development and operations manager of KaHa.

"It can also be a unified business that can monitor the performance and health of workers" used for children's clothing, senior citizens and carers, etc. "
