Shawn Mendes has apologized after resisting the racially "insensitive" tweets he sent as a 14-year-old boy.
The singer, 21, had previously said that he wanted the N-word contributions in which he spoke of "fair-skinned girls".
But after a setback, Shawn has now told fans he apologizes "wholeheartedly".
19659003] Shawn wrote on Instagram: "I posted some racially insensitive comments on social media when I was younger and I'm so sorry.
" I apologize with all my heart for what I said and understand, how offensive these posts were.  "There is no room for such comments and these words do not represent who I am, I stand for total exclusivity, equality and love."

In the now deleted tweets, Shawn seems to refer to a friend who was written ng: "A normal day with Mn **** Kareem [sic] "
Another reads" fair-skinned girls >> ".
In another, he posts a selfie with upstanding hair and the headline: "I have an AFRO!"

In a Q & A with a distraught fan who asked him about the tweets, Shawn said, "Many things I just have to go on, but I also think that the things that [you] saw like I had friends when I was 14, who wanted to pick up my phone and post things from them, because they thought it was funny, which I like 2,000 followers and it was this big thing.
"They posted photos of themselves and at the time I just did not think about it.
"I had no idea that I would have 50 million followers, which does not make it any better.

I have not said anything in the past, but considering that, I think that's not my personality."
Shawn is now dating Camila Cabello after her racy song "Senorita."
They are ready for the first time together since they confirmed their love affair with the VMAs next week.
