According to a US study stating that not all types of sitting are equally harmful, heart health and longevity may not be so bad as sitting at your desk all day, sitting in front of a TV.
"We have heard more and more about how smoking is new while sitting, and there are indications that prolonged sitting time brings many adverse health risks," said Jeanette Garcia, a researcher at the University of Central Florida in Orlando initiated the research.
"However, it is unclear whether all seats are the same, suggesting that as long as you reduce any type of sitting, this is helpful for improving your health," Garcia said via email. "This study suggests that this may not be the case and that we should focus more on leisure time sitting, mainly on TV than on sitting in general."
Almost a third of the 3,592 African-American adults in the study watched TV more than four hours a day. Just over a third of them sat in front of the TV for two to four hours each day, while the remaining third watched less than two hours a day.
People spending more time watching TV were more likely to be inactive, overweight, smoking, drinking heavily, were unhealthy, and had household incomes of less than $ 50,000 a year. $ 67,645), researchers report in the Journal of the American Heart Association. It was also more likely that they had high blood pressure and did not graduate.
The researchers followed the participants for an average of 8.4 years. During the study, 205 people died and 129 had events such as heart attack or stroke.
Compared to people who watched television less than two hours daily, those who sat in front of the TV for more than four hours were 49 percent more likely to die or have a cardiovascular event.
The negative health effects of television, however, seemed to be limited to people who did not receive the recommended amount of weekly exercise for optimal health: 150 minutes of moderate to physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise.
There was also no significant difference in the likelihood of dying or having a heart attack or stroke, depending on how many hours people were sitting at work.
People who reported spending more time at work were more likely to be women, younger and overweight, but also a high level of physical recreational activity, a high school diploma, a healthy diet, and a family income of over $ 50,000. They are also less likely to smoke or drink heavily, the researchers said.
It's possible that sitting in front of the TV is worse than sitting at a desk, because people are watching while snacking or staying up too late and not sleeping enough, Lin said Yang, a researcher at the University of Calgary in Canada, who was not involved in the study.
Sleep deprivation or senseless snacking can both lead to weight gain and contribute to other risk factors for heart disease that can increase the likelihood of people dying prematurely, Yang said via email.
"The evidence for television and health risks is (strong), despite the biological mechanisms that still need to be elucidated," Yang said, or how sitting directly could lead to health problems or whether other factors are being used by people who are sitting long in front of the TV, shared, could be the fault.
It would be a mistake for people with paperwork to assume that there is no need to move during the working day, sa id Arch Mainous, a researcher at the University of Florida in Gainesville who was not involved in the study.
"Some activity in the workplace must be integrated into the job requirements," Mainous said via email.  "Take the stairs and not the elevator, or take a walk for lunch," advised Mainous. "Leisurely leisure activity is definitely an advantage, but it should also be recommended to work in a few steps at the workplace."
