WASHINGTON – The FBI and military authorities said on Monday they are investigating half a dozen suspicious packages of explosive components sent to military and intelligence agencies in Washington Area
The first one was on Monday morning at the National Defense University discovered in Fort McNair in southwest Washington. It was quickly brought to safety, the military said.
At the end of the day, law enforcement officials said similar packages had surfaced at other military and intelligence sites – six in all, including the CIA mail sorting facility, a White House mail sorting facility in the suburbs of Washington, US Marine Factory in Dahlgren, Virginia, and two facilities in Fort Belvoir, Virginia – the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency and another defense university.
Law enforcement officials said the packages had been mailed. Some contained letters that an official described as disturbed and long-winded. And every time, they said, the packages were quickly salvaged.
