Tuesday at 6:15 am, it rained lightly in Boston and snow fell north of the Massachusetts Turnpike and off to the immediate coast, according to the National Weather Service.
"Some roads will be snowy / slippery for a while this morning, even in the lower elevations to the north east of MA," tweeted the meteorologist. "Most of the snow accumulation happens this morning, so be careful."
The rainy weather in Boston is due to switch to snow on Tuesday afternoon, but it will not matter much. Predictors said that little or no snow is expected in Boston.
Areas further inland will get some snow. A winter weather recommendation is in effect until 17:00. Tuesday for the west of Massachusetts and parts of the central part of the state, including Greenfield, Fitchburg and Ayer, which can receive anywhere from one inch to 5 inches of snowfall.
"Snowy times sometimes mixed with rain in the lower reaches," said the weather service. "The accumulation of snow will range from 1 to 2 inches in the lower reaches, 2 to 4 inches in the higher terrain, with occasional 5-inch amounts."
A small portion of Massachusetts public schools, which are located in the central and western part of the city, take a snow day or delay the opening on Tuesday. Ashburnham Westminster Regional School used the hashtag #itstooearlyforthis when announcing the closure for Tuesday. Also closed are the public schools of Gardner and Winchendon, according to their websites.
In New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont, closures and delays have also been reported, with morning and evening shuttles.
It's mostly cloudy in the Boston area on Tuesday night, snow in the evenings, and after midnight it's usually clear, with lows in the early 20's. Wednesday should be partly sunny, with highs in the lower 40s and snow showers in the afternoon, and according to forecasts. On Wednesday night, temperatures are sinking into the lower teens in the Boston area, where it's partly cloudy, a 30% chance for snow showers. It will be much colder and the lows in Boston will drop to about 13.
"There is a potential for localized heavy snowfall / poor visibility and fast falling temperatures that could affect travel," the forecasters said. "We will have to watch this very closely as this is one of the busiest travel days of the year."

The upcoming record cold on Thursday has already affected a rust. In Braintree, Mayor Joe Sullivan tweeted an important program change in the Turkey Bowl with Milton High School.
