Some visa applicants may need to pass the social media information to the State Department.

It is expected that the State Department will release a series of proposals on Friday calling for some tourists and immigrants to provide information about their social media accounts before visiting the US.

The proposals are part of a broader spectrum of efforts by the Trump administration to conduct an "extreme review" of immigration, the department said.

For the past five years, travelers should also provide phone numbers, email addresses, international travel and immigration questions, and respond to questions about possible family ties to terrorism.

"This upgrading of the visa process is long overdue and it is appropriate to apply for it for anyone who wants to enter because terrorism is a global problem, with the aim of excluding people with radical or dangerous views," he said Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, told the newspaper.

According to the documents, about 14 million people would be affected by the new proposals and another 700,000 would be affected by the immigration system.

Don Crocetti, a former senior investigator for US citizenship and immigration, said a person's refusal to convert their social media accounts could not be used solely to deny approval.

"Using social media is a key in your toolbox, it's not that you use the same wrench for everything you do, but it's a wrench, it's a different size tool, and you have selectively using it, "he said.

Following the release, the proposals allow 60 days for the public comment before the guidelines are finalized later this year.
