For many modern health professionals, probiotic drinks such as kombucha are an integral part of a healthy lifestyle.
Kombucha is a fermented, sweetened tea that consists of a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY). Within a semipermeable membrane it is said to support digestion, strengthen immunity, reduce inflammation, increase energy and even reduce anxiety and depression alleviate other (often dubious) claims. Since its popularity over the last decade, Kombucha can be found on the shelves of almost every grocery store, especially in health food stores like Whole Foods. The Kombucha market around the world is expected to reach $ 5.45 billion by 2025.
The rise of this drink among health-conscious people, however, has a price: your teeth. Some dentists note an increase in eroded enamel, which coincides with the popularity of Kombucha, and question the so-called miraculous effect.
"Kombucha is almost as acidic as a pop and energy drink," says Dr. Bobby J. Grossi an author spokesman and founder of the Grossi Institute for Dental Assisting, said Salon. "Acidic drinks get tangled up with the pH of saliva, which should ideally be 7 or 7.3, and when the saliva content gets more acidic, it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria that can take over the mouth."
These bacteria, according to Grossi, cause erosion of the enamel, accumulation of plaque that can lead to both gum disease and tooth decay. Sugary drinks from Grossi weaken your teeth.
Kombucha acid is critical to the survival of bacteria, making manufacturers challenging. Dr. Greg Grobmyer of AuthorityDental.org, who has a DDS from the University of Tennessee's Health Science Center, told Salon that it's almost as acidic as soda. "It's not uncommon to see in the mail of someone who drinks a lot of kombucha," he said to Salon.
Pitting occurs on the surface of a tooth and usually leads to disintegration.
"We suggest rinsing your mouth with water after drinking kombucha to rinse off the remaining acidic compounds and not eating or brushing for at least 30 minutes, so that your enamel can be remineralized and baked again," said Grobmyer.
It's better or worse, Grossi said, he does not think it's either between Kombucha and Soda.
"Both drinks are very sour and contain a lot of sugar," Grossi said, "I strongly believe Water and milk are the drinks of choice. "
" I always recommend drinking water with a fresh lemon to create a more alkaline environment, not just in your mouth, but in your blood, "Grossi said.
