A man is dead and a South Salt Lake police officer is fighting for his life after a burglary has turned into a confrontation between the police and two suspects.
According to Information Officer of the SSLPD, Gary Keller, a call comes in for a break-in Progress in a business complex at 3575 S. West Temple came at 17.30 Saturday. The officers arrived nine minutes later, and "at that time there was a confrontation between the suspects and our officers."
The suspects drove off in their car and beat one of the policemen.
"The police shot at the vehicle struck one of the suspects," said Keller, who was declared dead at the scene.
The injured police officer "was sent to the hospital in critical condition and immediately put into operation.
A second suspect ran away and was subsequently detained nearby by police dogs.
A vast police force, including units from the Unified Police Department, the Utah Highway Patrol and the Cottonwood Heights, worked at three different crime scenes ̵
"All suspects are held accountable," Keller said there is currently no threat to the public. "
Keller was visibly shaken when he said," We have an officer in the sick house fighting for his life.
The officer's and suspect's names were not released on Saturday.
