Pietermaritzburg – The organizers of the Mandela Day Marathon confirmed with great sadness on Sunday that an athlete had died after attending this year's Imbali in Pietermaritzburg marathon in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
"The athlete, who participated in the 21-kilometer run that died a few meters from the finish line," the organizers said in a statement.
The athlete collapsed, was immediately treated by a doctor and a paramedic and taken to a hospital where he was later declared dead.
It was the first time that the Mandela Day Marathon experienced such a tragic loss of life in its seven-year history. The organizers had contact with the family of the deceased.
"The organizers have expressed their sincere condolences to the family, and the loss of one athlete is being lamented by everyone in the running community," the statement says.
