DETROIT, MI (MPRN) – Governor Rick Snyder activates Michigan's Emergency Operations Center to monitor a failed Chinese space station that could potentially hit parts of the state.
China lost control of an eight-and-a-half space station the size of a school bus, and it makes an uncontrolled reentry into the earth. Experts believe that most of the station will burn in the atmosphere, but parts of it could be smashed all over a strip of land that covers part of Michigan's Lower Peninsula.
They predict that it will probably beat over the weekend.
Michigan Department of Homeland Security officials say they have set up protocols to respond to potential damage. But researchers estimate that the probability of being hit by one part of the station is about one to one trillion. In fact, only one person has ever been reported to have been hit by space debris ̵
The real danger could be when a person discovers one of the station remains on the ground. It could contain compounds that are very toxic.
