It was the first time that the experimental plane nicknamed "Starhopper" flew freely without being tied to the ground.
SpaceX wanted to lift the spacecraft about 20 meters into the air before it landed softly nearby – this is called SpaceX a "hop test". It is not clear exactly how high the ship flew. Footage from reporters present at the launch site in South Texas shows fire and smoke leaking out of Starhoppers massive Raptor rocket engine and obscuring the vehicle from view.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said the flight was a success.
"Water towers can fly," he joked in a tweet, referring to the similarity of Star Hopper to a cylindrical water tank. He also shared views of the launch taken by a nearby drone and a camera near the Raptor engine. Musk tweeted that SpaceX will next do a 200 meter hop test a week or two.
Starhopper to be an early precursor to a space exploration rocket called Starship According to Musk, the rapid development of technology is a top priority for SpaceX.
The latest design for Starship, formerly known as BFR, shows it on The most powerful rocket booster ever built goes into orbit PaceX hopes to use the launching system to move huge numbers of satellites into orbit and ultimately transport people into the solar system to explore and colonize Mars.
