Spotify knows that people change their training routines during the pandemic, making it easier for them to create playlists to set their regimes to music. The company launches an interactive website called Soundtrack Your Workout, where listeners can define their workouts and preferences and then create a playlist for them.
Playlists can be up to two hours long and be a mix of podcasts and music, or people can think of them as just one or the other. Listeners can also block explicit content. You’ll need to choose from eight different workouts (including yoga, lifting, cardio, and walking) and tell Spotify who you̵
My first test seemed to work well enough and gave me hip hop songs and motivational podcasts on request. Most of the podcasts came from Spotify’s own networks like Parcast and Gimlet, although they also mixed several independent shows.
Spotify already has pre-built workout playlists, but the bigger idea with this product seems to be that they contain podcasts and music and change based on your workout. Personalization is the key. This is also not the first time Spotify has attempted to create a personalized playlist specifically for workouts. In 2015, the company introduced a feature for runners who used their phone to set their pace and create a playlist. The feature was shut down a few years later. Although this new playlist feature doesn’t take BPM into account, it at least takes into account users’ preferences and what they do to design a playlist specifically for them.
