Standoff with armed suspect in Marietta Walmart Raubblöcken I-75



UPDATE [10:59 a.m.]: An altercation with an armed driver seems to have come to an end after negotiators and SWAT officers surrounded the man's car on I-75 South in Cobb County.

Channel 2 Action News Chopper footage showed authorities pulling the man out of a gray sedan and bringing him to the ground.

The investigation continues to block all southbound lanes. Delays extend over 10 miles.

It is not clear when the highway will be reopened. Several agencies remain at the scene.

ORIGINAL STORY: Officers with towed weapons have blocked all southbound lanes of I-75 locked uncooperative driver, armed near the I-285 intersection, according to the 24-hour traffic center of the WSB in Cobb County ,


The driver is suspected of being involved in an armed robbery in Walmart at 210 Cobb Pkwy, police spokesman Marietta, officer Chuck McPhilamy, said in a statement.

"Vehicle and driver agree with the description of a suspect who has committed an armed robbery in the city," he said. "Within a short period of time, Marietta officers located the suspect vehicle and tried to stop the traffic."

The driver did not stop immediately, but finally drove off the highway between Windy Hill Road and I-285, McPhilamy said. According to Channel 2 Action News

"The negotiators talk to the driver and try to work towards a peaceful solution to this situation," said McPhilamy.

The police dispute is developing on a day when spring-time traffic is expected to be particularly strong across the state, according to the traffic center.


Traffic is diverted from I-75 to Windy Hill Road. The traffic center suggests that drivers use Cobb Parkway, Atlanta Road or the expressways as alternative routes.


GDOT spokeswoman Natalie Dale told the traffic center that the Agency wants to delay the reversal of I-75's expressways until the situation becomes clear. The tracks are currently flowing south.
