Stay away from dangerous sunscreens, warns the FDA





The Food and Drug Administration issued warnings on Tuesday about dietary supplements designed to protect the public from sun damage.

"There is no pill or capsule that can replace your sunscreen," the agency wrote. "We have found products that allegedly protect against the sun, which do not offer the advertised benefits, instead misleading consumers and putting people at risk."

The warning letters were addressed to four companies and accused them, " Marketing illegal pills and capsules as dietary supplements that contain unproven claims about protecting consumers from harm to health that comes from sun exposure without meeting FDA safety and efficacy standards. "

The FDA specifically called out the following products to put people at risk:

The agency said the companies would all have to deal with it undoing federal violations connected with their products.

A representative from Napa Valley Bioscience told Time in a statement that its product "is made with ingredients that protect the skin from damage, according to published clinical studies," and is useful for supplemental protection and for users with sensitive skin.

"But to be clear, the sun is dangerous and UV Radiation damages the skin and we do not market Sunsafe Rx as a sunscreen, and of course we do not tell consumers that they need no other protection from the sun or that they do not need topical sunscreen, "the company said. "Everyone should exercise caution when exposed to the sun."

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, according to the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And every fifth American is at risk in his life to develop the condition.

The FDA is also researching the effectiveness of current sunscreen on the market, as some research has shown claims that some of the ingredients that are popular in traditional sunscreens can seep through the skin, although human damage is not yet complete because of this.
