STDs on the rise in Tampa Bay



HILLSBOROUGH, Fla. (WFLA) – According to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control, STDs are increasing across the country, and 8 On Your Side is seeing these numbers increase in the Tampa Bay area. to.

The CDC report published on Tuesday shows a significant increase in both congenital and infectious syphilis since 2014 (185% and 71%, respectively).

With 48 cases per 100,000 live, Florida has the seventh highest number of congenital syphilis births in the state.

Gonorrhea and both types of syphilis continued to increase in some districts of Tampa Bay.

Hundreds of cases of infectious and congenital syphilis have been reported in Tampa Bay over the past year.

Hillsborough, the region's largest district, reported nearly 650 cases of infectious syphilis between 2016 and 2018.

Since 2016, 7,115 cases have been reported in Hillsborough County alone, followed by Pinella at 4,576.

Florida also had the highest number of new HIV diagnoses between 2014 and 2017, with a high concentration of cases in southern Florida.
