Chocolate may be a better cough medicine than cough syrup, according to a recent study A group of researchers at the University of Hull in Yorkshire examined 163 patients and came conclude that cocoa is best for relieving sore throats.
Patients who had a chocolate-based drug showed improvement within two days, faster than patients with cough syrup, according to the study.
Researchers suggest sucking a piece of chocolate for optimal results.
Theobromine, an alkaloid in cocoa, can better suppress cough than codeine, which is in cold medicine research.
"We have just seen the results of the largest real-world study of over-the-counter cough medicine in Europe," said lead author Alyn Morice of the Daily Mail. "This proves that a new drug that contains cocoa is better than a standard linctus."
