Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Guide: How can I unlock each character quickly?

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate offers a lot out of the box. All 103 stages and over 700 songs are available from the moment you turn on the game. What is not available at the beginning – and that's a big one – is every fighter. While there are 74 playable characters on the grid (76 if you count the Pokémon Trainer's three Pokémon separately), only eight are unlocked from the start. So many worlds to play with, so few combatants.

There are countless ways to unlock fighters – the only unifying core is that the more you play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in any mode, the more characters you unlock ̵

1; but there is one method , much faster than others, although you need to spend a little more time in the menus of the Nintendo Switch.

OK, who do I have to work with from the beginning?

First Launch Super Smash Bros. Ultimate includes eight of the twelve playable fighters from the original Nintendo 64 game: Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox and Pikachu. (Ness, Luigi, Jigglypuff, and Captain Falcon are among the group of 66 to be unlocked.)

Some of them are simple pallet exchanges, while others are a bit more involved – Mario, for example, has his wedding suit from Super Mario Odyssey while Pikachu has the usual headgear variation.

The first fighter lasts the longest. Probably

In the first step, some rounds of Ultimate are played. Simple enough, yes? In our tests, the first unlock takes place within 8 to 10 minutes of the game time. This is the time spent in matches, not menus. The game counts these times separately. To see "Play Time" and "Smash Bros. Powered Time Count" go to "Vault" in the main menu, then "Records", then "Stats".

At the end of any game, cross the total playing time in this area as soon as you click on the familiar siren sound through the Postgame Statistics Report. Along with a silhouette of the fighter and a well-known line should ring it: "A new enemy has appeared! Challenger approaches.

. Now all you have to do is defeat the challenger. Do not worry if you lose: There are ways to try again (more on that later).

  1. Win or lose when you face the challenger do not play another game.
  2. Instead, press the Home button on your switch controller to return to the main menu. Press X to exit the software and confirm the selection.
  3. Now reopen the game.
  4. Instead of playing a 10-minute round, this time you'll create a new ruleset with a holding of 1 that will allow you to play as fast as possible.
  5. Play this game with your favorite Fighter, and after you've gone through the postgame statistics menu, a new challenger should be approaching to unlock. (Hint: Play again with a "human" opponent) and run it from the map immediately after starting the game.)

If you repeat this method, you will not have to wait another 10 minutes before being offered another character to unlock. This dramatically shortens the time in between. Why does it work? Our best guess is that Nintendo wanted to make sure that you feel rewarded every time you start the game. Whatever the reasons, 90 percent of the time it worked.

When will I unlock my favorite character?

Although it may seem arbitrary at first glance – we certainly liked it – there is an order in which you can unlock characters using the above playtime / reset method. Note that the unlocking order differs for classic mode (more on that later) and World of Light (based on map location and if you face the fighter). Therefore, you can use these methods to unlock certain characters sooner.

[ Important Notice: We have independently confirmed all of this list and the classic mode list below to about 80 percent. The rest comes through the incredible Smash Bros subreddit. We're working to confirm the rest, but we've also considered it important to now share as we do.]

Is there a faster way to get to my favorite character? (aka How to Use the Classic Mode and the World of Light)

If you're a fan of Bayonetta, it's definitely a long time to wait, but luckily, the unlock order is very different for other modes.

The simplest alternative method is to play Classic mode, a series of themed battles, and a boss fight that should take about 10 minutes or less for each character.

Each time you play in Classic Mode, you have the option to unlock a character. This is especially not accidental. The unlock lists appear to be grouped based on the featured fighters:

  • Mario Path: Sonic, Bayonetta, Mac, Ike, Luigi, Roy, Dr. Mario, Olimar
  • Donkey Kong Trail: Bowser, Pokémon Trainer, Rosalina and Luma, King Dedede, Sheikh, Greninja, Diddy Kong, Duck Hunting
  • Link Path: King K. Rool, Ice Climber, Simon, Meta Knight, Snake, Young Link, Judge, Toon Link
  • Samus Path: Inkling, Wii Fit Trainer, Pit, Incineroar, Dark Suit Samus, Cloud, Wario, Dark Pit
  • Yoshi Trail: Lucario, Marth, Ryu, Ganondorf, Lucina, Ridley, Chrom, Ken
  • Kirby Trail: Ness, Jigglypuff, Pac-Man, Zelda, Robin, Corrin, Lucas, Palutena [19659104] Fox Trail: Captain Falcon, Zero Suit Samus, Peach, Falco, Daisies, Bowser Jr. Wolf, Mewtwo
  • Pikachu Trail : Villager, Shulk, ROB, Mega Man, Isabelle, Game and Watch, Pichu

How Lucario Is Unlocked If you then play with Yoshi or Lucario again, Marth will unlock and so on. If you have unlocked a character in some other way (eg World of Light or over the game time), the approaching challenger will be the next one on the list. If you go through the entire path, the game will display a new challenger from another list.

I really just want the Mii fighters.

Oh, that's easy – just make a Mii Fighter (Brawler, Swordfighter and Gunner). You will find the option under Games & More in the main menu.

Challenger's approach (also, "What happens if I lose the challenge?")

No matter how well you play, there are accidents and the Challenger could beat you. (I am not ashamed to say that Jigglypuff has outdone me several times.) The phrase, the first time you lose, might make you think that you will wait a long time – like after you've put all the other fighters on for a long time. But fortunately that is not the case.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Challengers Approach Unveiled

Sora Ltd., Bandai Namco Studios / Nintendo Via Polygon

Eventually, after some challengers they appear. 19659114] Smash Bros. Ultimate informs you of a new option that is sometimes referred to as Challengers Approach . It will appear as a glowing door in the lower right corner of the Games & More menu. Clicking on this will give you a second chance to unlock KO players and unlock challengers you've encountered before, in the same order you found them. Use the fighter you want (ie you are not limited to the first character you won in a previous game).

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Challengers Approach Statement

Sora Ltd., Bandai Namco Studios / Nintendo on Polygon

We still have not quite figured out how many times the door pops up – when we had one or two challengers that could be unlocked, it seemed rare, but as soon as the queue queued at five or six, the Challenger option seemed to appear every time we saw a new challenger. We recommend that you look again after each game before closing and reopening the game. Just in case.

I restarted the game and no new challenger was found. Help!

Although this method was consistent with our first account each time, testing with a new profile on the same switch resulted in a small hickup: a new challenger did not appear, even after we tried the close-and-reopen-and -Play-A-Quick-Round method several times.

The update was thankfully simple, albeit a bit annoying: we used the 10-minute rule set and went away. At the end of the game we had a new challenger. We fought, lost, closed again and reopened the game, and voila: After that, the fast loop worked well.

What else will trigger the new challenger is still in the debate and was sometimes all contributed by the following minutes: minutes, number of human players in that time, pressed keystrokes, distance traveled by character, etc.

Can I do not unlock fighters through the adventure mode "World of Light"?

Yes, but it can take dozens of hours this way. If you're just trying to get a complete list as soon as possible, this is the fastest and most consistent method we've found so far. (Some Spirit Board challenges also seemed to work, though it was far from consistent, and the challenges were much more difficult and ultimately felt like a long time.)

Very early in World of Light, you & # 39; Three fighters were selected: Marth, Sheik or Villager. Whatever you choose will be displayed in multiplayer mode. When these three are at the top of your list of to-haves, this is one of the fastest ways to unlock them.

One important note: If you use World of Light / Spirit Boards to unlock characters, they will be displayed in smash mode without any extra work. However, if you unlock all your characters in the game's competitive multiplayer mode, you will not have access to World of Light. Due to the narrative thread of this mode, you will slowly unlock the fighters when you encounter them on the world map. They only start with Kirby, which is available. Smash mode may give you a complete list, but only a handful of characters that are playable in World of Light.

How much time does that really save me?

If Using this method instead of playing 10-minute rounds means that you can face a new challenger after a 10-second round (assuming you have a second human-controlled player nearby who does not mind to run away from the edge of the screen as soon as the round starts. With 66 unlockable fighters, the time savings add up pretty quickly. Even if you play rounds for a minute, skipping nine minutes per unlock means you save less than 10 hours to hold the rank.
