A suspected MS-13 gang member broke into a sleeping 11-year-old girl's bedroom and raped her this week in Brooklyn, New York, police said.
Police sources have identified the suspect as Julio Cesar Ayala, 18, an immigrant from El Salvador who lives nearby, the New York Post reported.
The alleged attack took place on Wednesday, the report said.
On Saturday afternoon, officials from the New York City Department of Emergency Services found Ayala in a three-story basement building, the Post reported.
His capture was reportedly received by applause and applause from nearby spectators.
His only form of identification, according to police, was a permanent resident card, also known as a green card.
He was charged with sexual assault and first degree rape and was expected to be charged on Sunday.
A police source told the newspaper that Ayala was a member of the brutal MS-13 gang.
The suspect is allegedly on the roof of "The house of the victim has crawled through a window and raped the girl in her bed," the source said.
But the suspect fled when the girl's cries alerted her mother, it said. The mother did not catch a glimpse of the suspect, but called the emergency call.
Video footage made it possible for the police to capture a picture of the suspect trying to disguise himself, the New York Daily News reported.
