The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (Taiwan CDC) announced five new cases of measles confirmed in Taiwan, including four cases related to the latest cluster. For the fifth case, the source is still under investigation.
The onset of the disease is between the 13th and 14th of April. They are employees of two different airlines.
To date, a total of 12 measles cases related to the cluster have been confirmed, including the index case.
On April 18, Taiwan sent CDC colleagues to Taoyuan International Airport to brief staff on the current status of the current measles outbreak and possible areas at risk of infection, and to provide them with appropriate preventive measures to stop further transmission of the disease
To further prevent transmission of the disease, the local health department has conducted a series of preventive measures and identified 2,978 contacts to monitor and follow up by 6 May 2018. Taiwan CDC reiterates that vaccination is the best way to prevent infection. Parents are urged to ensure timely vaccination of children under one year of age and those who have it have not completed the MMR vaccination series and to avoid bringing unvaccinated children to the affected areas to prevent infection. Adult travelers planning to visit the affected areas should also visit the outpatient travel clinic in contracted hospitals in the country to determine the need for an MMR vaccine 2 weeks prior to travel.
